The core difference is actually that the depth of the intervention, the logic of action, and the appropriate scenarios are different. It is not a superficial difference like "one hurts and the other feels comfortable" as everyone thinks.
Last week, a young man who was designing came to my clinic. He suffered from stiff neck pain and his neck could only be tilted to one side. I rubbed it at home for two days, but the swelling became worse. When I turned my head, half of my head hurt. When I came here, I didn't touch his neck first. I inserted two fine needles into the stiff neck points on the back of his hands, twisted them for half a minute, and asked him to slowly try to turn his head. On the spot, he was able to turn his head to 70% of the normal angle, and most of the pain disappeared. After that, I gave him a relaxing neck muscle massage for more than ten minutes, and he was basically back to normal that day.
You can see that the functions of these two steps do not overlap at all. The core of acupuncture is to stimulate the acupoints by inserting needles to regulate the flow of qi and blood at the meridian level. Many times, the acupoints are not at uncomfortable locations at all, such as Zusanli on the foot for stomach pain, and Hegu on the hand for toothache. They all work through the conduction of distal meridians. The effect is deeper and targets not only local discomfort. For many chronic medical problems and stubborn pain, acupuncture will have a more direct regulatory effect.
Of course, there are always different views in the industry. Many masters who have been doing massage for decades believe that the intensity of pressing acupoints can penetrate into the deep muscles and have a meridian-regulating effect similar to acupuncture. It does not mean that massage can only act on the epidermis. This boundary is not so absolute.
However, the core of most conventional massages is to use mechanical massage and massage to relax tight soft tissues and clear the superficial blood blockage. The most suitable scenarios are physiological fatigue and superficial muscle strain. For example, if you sit for a long day and have back pain, or your calves are sore after climbing a mountain, you can find a place to press for half an hour, and you will feel much better immediately. In this case, special acupuncture is not necessary.
There is another very practical difference that few people notice. Acupuncture is an invasive medical procedure. The operator must be a licensed physician and be familiar with human anatomy and acupoint taboos. For example, if the acupuncture points on the chest and neck are inserted in the wrong position or at the wrong depth, there may be dangers.; The threshold for massage is relatively low, but if you really want to do it well, you need to understand the knowledge of anatomy and meridians. Otherwise, if you rub it with brute force, you may damage the muscles that are not problematic. I have encountered patients who went to irregular health centers for waist massage. It was originally just muscle strain, but the force of the massage caused the lumbar disc to herniate and compress the nerves. In the end, surgery was required.
In fact, to use an inappropriate analogy, these two are like conditioning fruit trees. Acupuncture directly injects nutrient solution near the roots of the tree, and regulates the growth status of the entire tree. Even if your leaves turn yellow, you may not necessarily apply medicine directly to the leaves.; Massage is to first clear the wormholes and scars on the surface of the tree trunk, loosen the hardened surface soil, and solve the surface blockage problem first. There is no way to say which one is better. If they are right for the disease, the effect of using them together is much better than doing either one alone.
