The core logic of first aid and emergency health training is to build content around "being able to predict beforehand, dare to take action when encountering problems, and not causing trouble afterwards". It goes far beyond the practical skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and bandaging to stop bleeding in people's minds. I have been doing community emergency training for almost 6 years, and the most common people I meet often ask, "Should we just learn to press on the chest?" To be honest, the training in the past few years was really focused on practical operations, but now the content has long been iterated to meet actual needs.
The core must-learn content must be skills corresponding to scenarios that are most likely to be encountered by the public, such as adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation + AED use, Heimlich maneuver for children and adults, traumatic compression and hemostasis, burn and scald treatment by "rinsing off the bubble cap and sending it away", and simple fixation of sprains and fractures. These contents will not be taught in PPT alone, but must be equipped with a simulator. , simulated airway models for students to practice. Last year, a supermarket tallyman in our jurisdiction encountered a customer who had a heart attack in the second week of training. He took out the AED equipped in the supermarket and connected it in 3 minutes. By the time 120 arrived, the person had resumed breathing on his own. If he had not practiced the bare-back knowledge points, he would have probably panicked and his hands were shaking on the spot.
Oh, yes, don’t think that learning the operation is enough. Now we spend almost one-third of our time on pre-judgment, which is also a part that many people tend to ignore. For example, how to quickly identify the FAST signal of stroke, how to predict the precursors of heatstroke on hot days, how to check for poisoning and suffocation risks before working in a confined space, and how to avoid the risks of choking, electric shock, and accidental ingestion that are easily encountered by the elderly and children at home. Last month, a mother discovered that her 2-year-old child was pregnant within two days of the training. My baby kept picking at his throat, drooling, and crying. I originally thought it was throat inflammation, but suddenly I remembered the early signs of ingestion of foreign objects we talked about. I hurriedly went to the hospital to take X-rays and took out a button battery. The doctor said that if the battery leaked for half a day, it would probably burn through the esophagus. This is much more effective than waiting until the baby is stuck and can't breathe before rescuing.
The remaining part is the post-mortem handling content that people rarely pay attention to, such as how to explain the exact location and patient symptoms after dialing 120, how to protect yourself during the rescue process, how to retain evidence to avoid disputes after rescuing people, and emotional counseling after minor trauma. Whether it is the person involved or the rescuer, how to quickly calm down after an unexpected accident, these are all covered in current training.
There are also different voices in the industry. For example, some people propose that content such as pet first aid and outdoor extreme sports emergency response should be included in general training. Supporters believe that there are many pet owners and outdoor enthusiasts, and these contents are highly practical. Opponents believe that the resources of public training are insufficient. Sources and time are limited, so we must give priority to thoroughly explaining the content that is most relevant to ordinary people, and don’t bite off more than we can chew. Our current approach is to first ensure that the core content is in place for general training. If you are entering targeted groups such as pet communities and outdoor clubs, then add corresponding special content as needed. After working in this business for so long, my biggest feeling is that these contents are never static, and are adjusted according to everyone's actual needs. The core is to help ordinary people not go blank when they encounter problems, and it is enough to be able to help.
