Menstrual dysmenorrhea can be quickly relieved by hot compresses, taking painkillers, moderate exercise, drinking warm water, and abdominal massage. Dysmenorrhea is usually caused by excessive prostaglandin secretion, abnormal uterine position, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, mental stress and other factors.

    1. Hot compress

Hot compress on the lower abdomen can promote local blood circulation and help relax the uterine muscles, thereby reducing spasmodic pain. You can use a hot water bottle or baby warmer, control the temperature at 40-50 degrees Celsius, and apply it for 15-30 minutes each time. Be careful to avoid scalding the skin, and take deep breaths to relieve tension during the hot compress.

    2. Take painkillers

For moderate to severe dysmenorrhea, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen sustained-release capsules, diclofenac sodium enteric-coated tablets, paracetamol and codeine tablets can be used as directed by the doctor. This type of drug relieves pain by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. It is recommended to start taking it 1-2 days before menstruation for better results. People with weak gastrointestinal function should avoid taking medicine on an empty stomach.

    3. Moderate exercise

Low-intensity exercise such as walking and yoga during menstruation can help stimulate the secretion of endorphins, thereby reducing pain. It is recommended to choose soothing stretches and avoid strenuous exercise or movements that increase abdominal pressure. The duration of exercise should be controlled to 20-30 minutes, and it is appropriate for the body to be slightly warm but not sweaty.

    4. Drink warm water

Maintaining adequate water intake can improve pelvic congestion. The recommended daily water intake is 1500-2000 ml. You can drink moderate amounts of warm drinks such as brown sugar ginger tea, longan and red date tea, which can help dispel cold and warm the palace. However, caffeinated drinks need to be avoided as they may worsen the discomfort.

    5. Massage the abdomen

Gently massage the abdomen clockwise with the navel as the center, and press Sanyinjiao, Guanyuan and other acupoints for 10-15 minutes each time. Apply a small amount of warm essential oil before massaging to enhance the effect. This method is suitable for use when the amount of menstrual blood is normal. If the amount of bleeding is excessive, avoid pressing.

It is recommended to keep your waist and abdomen warm during menstruation and avoid contact with cold water or eating raw or cold food. Maintain a regular schedule and ensure 7-8 hours of sleep every day. If dysmenorrhea continues to worsen or is accompanied by fever, abnormal secretions and other symptoms, you should seek medical treatment promptly to check for organic diseases such as adenomyosis. Regular supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids and calcium and magnesium preparations can help reduce prostaglandin synthesis.
