Blisters on the foreskin may be related to conditions such as balanoposthitis, genital herpes, allergic reactions, frictional irritation, or candida infections. Treatment options include anti-inflammatory therapy, antiviral treatment, topical care, anti-allergic treatment, and antifungal treatment.
1. Balanoposthitis
Balanoposthitis is usually an inflammatory response caused by a bacterial infection or poor hygiene, and it commonly presents with redness, swelling, pain of the foreskin, increased discharge, as well as blisters or ulcers. Treatment should follow medical advice and involve the use of topical antibiotics such as erythromycin ointment or mupirocin ointment; in severe cases, cefixime dispersible tablets may be taken orally. It is important to keep the affected area clean and dry on a daily basis, and to avoid irritation from soaps.
2. Genital herpes
Genital herpes is caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus type 2 and is characterized by clusters of small blisters accompanied by a burning sensation; it tends to recur frequently. After confirmation of the diagnosis, acyclovir cream should be applied topically, or valacyclovir hydrochloride tablets should be taken orally for antiviral treatment. Sexual activity should be avoided during an episode, and partners should also undergo simultaneous examinations.
3. Allergic reactions
Contact with allergenic substances such as condoms and bath products can lead to contact dermatitis of the foreskin, resulting in itchy blisters. The suspicious product should be discontinued immediately. After cleaning the area with normal saline, apply hydrocortisone cream. People with sensitive skin should choose fragrance-free, hypoallergenic personal care products.
4. Frictional stimulation
Intense sexual activity or friction from clothing can cause mechanical blisters, characterized by damage to the epidermis and the accumulation of clear fluid. Stop sexual activity and wear loose cotton underwear; applying cold compresses to the affected area can help reduce swelling. If the blisters rupture, fusidic acid cream can be used to prevent infection.
5. Candida infection
Diabetics or individuals with weakened immune systems are more prone to developing candidal balanitis, which is characterized by white, curd-like discharge and small blisters in the surrounding area. The treatment should involve the use of clotrimazole cream or miconazole nitrate powder as prescribed by a doctor, along with proper control of blood sugar levels. Avoid sharing towels or other items with others.
It is recommended to wash the foreskin with warm water daily, fully retract it, and allow it to dry in order to avoid scratching the affected area. Choose breathable cotton underwear and change it frequently. Also, reduce your intake of spicy and stimulating foods in your diet. If blisters recur frequently, are accompanied by fever, or cause swelling of the lymph nodes in the groin area, it is necessary to seek medical attention promptly to determine the underlying cause. Do not try to burst the blisters on your own or use any home remedies, as this could lead to secondary infections.
