Male candidal balanitis can be treated by keeping the area clean, applying topical antifungal drugs, oral antifungal drugs, avoiding irritating factors, and improving living habits. Male candidal balanitis is usually caused by factors such as candida infection, low immunity, humid local environment, poor hygiene habits, and diabetes.
1. Keep the area clean
Male patients with candidal balanitis need to wash their foreskin and glans with warm water every day, using gentle movements to avoid friction damage. After cleaning, dry the moisture thoroughly, especially in the folds on the inside of the foreskin to reduce the chance of fungal growth in a moist environment. Avoid using alkaline soaps or fragrance-containing lotions that irritate the skin, and choose a mild medical skin cleanser. The frequency of cleaning should be controlled to 1-2 times a day. Excessive cleaning will damage the skin barrier.
2. Topical antifungal drugs
Topical application of antifungal ointments can directly inhibit the growth of Candida. Clotrimazole cream, miconazole cream, ketoconazole cream, etc. are commonly used. The medicine needs to evenly cover the infected area on the glans and foreskin with a thickness of about 1 mm. Make sure the area is dry before use. After application, keep the drug in contact for a long time. It is recommended to wear loose and breathable underwear to prevent the drug from being rubbed off by clothing. Some patients may experience a temporary burning sensation. If redness and swelling persist, they need to stop taking the medication and seek medical attention.
3. Oral antifungal drugs
Patients with severe or recurrent attacks need systemic antifungal treatment such as oral fluconazole capsules and itraconazole capsules. These drugs are distributed through the blood to the site of infection and inhibit fungal cell membrane synthesis. Liver and kidney function need to be monitored during medication and avoid taking it with specific drugs. Partners need to be treated simultaneously to prevent cross-infection, and barrier contraceptive measures should be taken while taking the medicine.
4. Avoid irritating factors
During treatment, sexual intercourse should be suspended until symptoms completely disappear to prevent friction from aggravating inflammation or infecting your partner. Do not wear tight-fitting chemical fiber underwear, choose pure cotton breathable material to reduce local stuffiness. Avoid using irritating products such as alcohol-based wipes and body wash. Diabetic patients need to strictly control their blood sugar, as a high blood sugar environment can easily cause fungal recurrence.
5. Improve living habits
Maintain a regular schedule to enhance immunity, and appropriately supplement foods such as yogurt containing probiotics to adjust the balance of flora. Reduce high sugar intake in the diet and increase fresh vegetables and fruits to supplement vitamins. Use towel baths separately and boil and disinfect them regularly to avoid cross-infection within the family. Patients with relapse need to investigate potential triggers, such as long-term antibiotic use or immunosuppressive treatment history.
Male patients with candidal balanitis should wear loose cotton underwear during treatment, change them every day, and wash and disinfect them with hot water above 60°C. The diet should be light, and the intake of alcohol and spicy food should be limited. Foods containing allicin can be consumed in moderation to help inhibit bacteria. Avoid local compression caused by long-term riding or sitting, and dry the perineum thoroughly after bathing. If accompanied by underlying diseases such as diabetes, priority must be given to controlling the primary disease. If symptoms persist for more than 1 week or purulent secretions appear, timely follow-up visits are required to adjust the treatment plan.
