Cordyceps sinensis is a complex of the spores and larvae bodies of the ergot fungus Cordyceps sinensis parasitized on the larvae of the bat moth insect. Cordyceps is a symbiosis between fungi and insects. It is caused by an ascomycete fungus infecting leptopteran larvae and then bricking them into loose soil. In the spring of the second year, a rod-shaped "grass" grows from the front end of the insect body and sticks out of the ground. It mostly grows on high mountains and is produced in Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu, Qinghai, Tibet and other places. Wild Cordyceps is collected before and after the summer solstice, when the snow has not yet melted, most of the spores are exposed on the snow, and the spores have not yet dispersed. After finding it, dig out the worm body and the spores. When the worm body is moist but not dry, remove the outer layer of soil and membrane, dry it or sun-dry, and cultivate the Cordyceps artificially. After the spores have grown, harvest it and dry it.
Cordyceps sinensis consists of a worm body and fungal spores growing from the head. The body of the insect is like a silkworm cocoon, 3 to 5 cm long, 3 to 8 mm in diameter, dark brown to brown on the surface, with 20 to 30 rings. The rings are thin near the head, the head is reddish brown, 8 pairs of legs, 4 pairs in the middle are more obvious, brittle, easy to break, and the cross section is yellowish white. The stroma is solitary, slender and cylindrical, 4 to 7 cm long and about 3 mm in diameter; the surface is dark brown to tan, with fine longitudinal wrinkles, the upper part is slightly enlarged, the texture is flexible, and the cross-section is off-white. The smell is slightly fishy and the taste is slightly bitter. Insects with bright yellow color, plump and fat body, yellowish-white cross-section and short pedestal are preferred.
